WebDAV shares
Play video files straight from a NAS or online storage, with artwork and details matched for you.
A WebDAV share is a folder of video files that Strand reads over the network: a NAS at home, a computer sharing a folder, or online storage that offers WebDAV. Strand looks through the folders, works out which film or episode each file is, and fills in the artwork and details.
Adding a share
- Go to Settings then WebDAV then Add WebDAV Share (Add Share… on the Mac).
- Server URL: the share's full address, for example
https://dav.example.com/media/. - Credentials: the username and password for the share.
- Folders to Index (optional): limit the scan to the folders that hold video. Leave it empty to scan everything.
- Display Name, then Save.
Strand starts indexing straight away. The share's row shows progress ("Indexing — 140 folders scanned") and then a count of films, episodes and shows.
Keeping it up to date
Each time you open Strand it checks whether the index needs refreshing: a quick look for changes after 15 minutes, on shares that support it, and a full rescan once a week. To rescan now, choose Re-index on the share.
Per-share options
- Use as Playback Source (Enabled/Disabled on Apple TV): switch a share off without removing it.
- Single Connection: for storage that limits how many connections can be open at once. Try it if files fail to open or playback keeps stopping.
- Edit Share and Remove Share.
Seeing what's on it
Add a row from Settings then Shelves then Add Shelf then WebDAV, or browse a share from the Library tab on iPhone, iPad and the Mac. Films and episodes found on a share also become something you can play from that title's page anywhere in Strand.
