Building your Home screen
Add, reorder and hide rows, choose how the big banner at the top behaves, and set up the tabs.
Home is a stack of rows, which Strand calls shelves. Every one of them is yours to add, move, rename or remove, and they sync to your other devices through iCloud.
Adding a row
- Go to Settings then Shelves then Add Shelf.
- Choose Style: how the row looks. Row Classic is posters; Row Wide is landscape cards; the Numbered versions add a big rank number; Groups Row shows tiles that each open a collection. TV Guide (once you've added a TV provider) shows what's on now and next, and Sports Scores and My Teams show games.
- Choose the Content Source: a list from your tracking service, a library or collection on your media server, a WebDAV share, your TV provider's films, live channels, your watchlist or history on this device, or a TMDB list such as trending films or a collection.
Continue Watching and Upcoming are built in. You can move them or hide them, but not delete them.
Moving, hiding and removing rows
| Device | How |
|---|---|
| Apple TV | In Shelves, the up and down arrows move a row, the eye hides a built-in row, and the bin deletes. Open a row to switch it off with Enabled. |
| iPhone, iPad | Tap Edit and drag; swipe left to delete. Open a row for Enabled and Delete Shelf. |
| Mac | Drag to reorder; right-click for Delete Shelf. Open a row for Show on Home. |
The banner at the top
The big banner is called the hero. Set it up in Settings then Shelves then Hero.
- Apple TV has four styles. Focus-Driven changes the backdrop to whatever you're focused on. Fixed Fullscreen keeps one title on screen. Classic Carousel and Fullscreen Classic cycle through titles from a Primary Source and an optional Secondary Source.
- iPhone, iPad and the Mac have a Style of Card or Fullscreen, with the same Primary and Secondary Source.
On Apple TV and the Mac, Trailer Previews can play a trailer behind the hero or on a poster you're resting on. Choose Poster Previews, Hero Trailers, how long to wait (Poster Preview Delay), whether they Start Muted, and the Trailer Language.
Sharing a layout
To copy your rows to a friend or another setup: on iPhone, iPad and the Mac, Shelves then Import / Export then Copy to Clipboard, then Import from Clipboard on the other side. On Apple TV, Import Shelves takes the pasted text or a link to it.
Top Shelf on Apple TV
When Strand is in the top row of the Apple TV Home Screen, the area above it shows your Continue Watching. Turn on Settings then General then Top Shelf then Full Screen Top Shelf for full-screen artwork instead. This is set per Apple TV.
Tabs and navigation
- Apple TV: Settings then General then Navigation sets the Opening Tab, and whether the Menu Bar is a Sidebar (the default) or along the Top. Tab Order moves and hides tabs. Prevent Accidental Exit asks before the Back button leaves Strand.
- iPhone and iPad: Settings then General has Opening Tab and Tab Order. iPhone shows five tabs; the rest are reachable from Library.
- Mac: Settings then General has Opening Tab and Sidebar Order.
