iCloud and new devices

Keep every device in step with iCloud, and copy your whole setup to a new one in a minute.

iCloud sync

Turn on Settings then Data & Storage then iCloud Sync (on the Mac, Sync Settings under iCloud Sync). Strand asks which copy to keep the first time: Use iCloud Data takes what's already in iCloud, Use This Device sends this device's setup up.

It syncs your settings, Home rows, sources, playback progress, rewatches and shuffle history. Every device needs to be signed in to the same Apple Account, with iCloud on for Strand.

Push to iCloud and Pull from iCloud send or fetch everything right now, including your on-device watchlist, history and favourites.

What stays on each device

  • Your tracking sign-in. Sign in to Trakt or Simkl on each device.
  • Preferred Resolution, and subtitle size, position and timing, because a phone and a TV need different ones.
  • Downloads.

Setting up an Apple TV from your iPhone

  1. On the iPhone, turn on iCloud Sync and choose Use This Device.
  2. Wait a minute or two for it to upload.
  3. On the Apple TV, turn on iCloud Sync and choose Use iCloud Data.

Copying a setup without iCloud

Share Setup sends your setup to another device, or to a friend, with a code, a link or a file. Choose what to include: Home rows, Live TV providers and channel setup, media servers, API keys, playback settings, subtitle appearance and source ordering. Passwords and server sign-ins are left out unless you tick them under Credentials. Trakt and Simkl sign-ins are never sent.

  1. On the device you're copying to, open Import Setup (or Restore from Another Device during setup). It shows a code that works once, for ten minutes.
  2. On the device you're copying from, open Share Setup → Send with a Code and enter that code.
  3. Back on the new device, choose Import Setup. What's new is added; nothing you already have is replaced.

On iPhone, iPad and the Mac you can also share a link or a .strand file, and open it with Import Setup on the other side.
