Recordings

Connect a recorder, record a programme or a whole series, and skip the ad breaks.

Strand doesn't record by itself; it tells a recorder on your network what to record, then plays the recordings back. It works with three:

  • Strand Recorder: Strand's own recorder. It runs on a computer that stays on (a Mac, a Windows or Linux PC, or a NAS with Docker) and finds the ad breaks in what it records.
  • Dispatcharr, if you already run it.
  • The DVR in Jellyfin or Emby, found automatically on servers you've added.

Connecting a recorder

  1. Go to Settings then Live TV then Recorder (under Recording on Apple TV).
  2. Choose Strand Recorder or Dispatcharr, enter its address (for example 192.168.1.20) and its password or API key if it has one, and tap Connect.

Connect it once, on any device, and your other devices pick it up. On Apple TV it's easier to connect from an iPhone, iPad or Mac and let it appear by itself. With more than one recorder, Record With decides which is used; Automatic picks the first that's available.

Recording

  • Something coming up: select the programme in the guide and choose Record, or Record Series for every episode.
  • Something on now: Start Recording from the programme's menu, or the record button in the player. Change your mind with Stop Recording, or add Record 30 More Minutes when a match runs over.

Series and repeating recordings are listed under Repeats & Series. Start Early and Keep Recording After add a margin either side, so the start and end aren't cut off; Keep Recording After goes up to two hours.

Ad breaks

Strand Recorder marks the ad breaks in each recording. Choose what Ad Breaks does when you watch: Show Skip Button, Skip Automatically or Off.

Watching recordings

Recordings appear in Live TV under Recordings and Scheduled, in Library, and in the recorder's own settings page (Recording Now, Scheduled, Recorded, Failed). For a row on Home, add a shelf from Live TV then Recordings or Scheduled Recordings.
